I’m writing this blog post at the request of a sweet friend of mine. She messaged me and told me that I should do a blog post about different ways to style a bralette because she owned two of them and had yet to find something to wear them with. As I thought about it, I realized that I wear bralettes all the time. I started going through photos of outfits that I had shared and it dawned on me that I could just round up all of the ways that I’ve worn a bralette so far. So here you have it! All of my different ways to style a bralette.
A Bralette and a Thermal
I will start here because this is about as classic of a combo as they come. A bralette is to a thermal what butter is to toast. Sure, there are other types of spreads and toppings that you can put on your toast, but none as classic and comforting as butter. The same thing goes for thermals. There are other types of bras that you could wear with them, but why? Bralettes are basically the pj’s of bras (in fact I do occasionally wear my bralettes to bed). They are the comfiest version of a bra that you will find. So if you’re going to wear something as casual and comfy as a thermal, you might as well pair it with a bralette.
With an off the shoulder sweater or sweatshirt
A bralette paired with an off the shoulder sweater or sweatshirt makes for the perfect casual fall look! I love both of these tops because they both naturally sit somewhat off the shoulder. Even if you don’t choose to pull one shoulder all the way down, a bralette with a thick, wispy strap will still show in a way that looks intentional.
With a spaghetti strap dress
Or with a spaghetti strap anything, really! Thin straps can be hard to work with, especially in warmer weather when you want as few layers on you as possible. A normal bra under spaghetti straps can come off a little trashy and when it’s hot, you don’t want to have to add an extra layer to hide your bra straps. This is where a good bralette can be a lifesaver! Not only will it allow you to wear a dress or a top with thin straps, but it also adds a little extra dimension to your look!
Layered under a Kimono
Just like a bralette can add a little dimension to a spaghetti strap top or dress, so too can it add a little extra depth to a tank and kimono. I especially like this for a weekend look or a night out on the town. It adds a bit of a risque element without being over the top. I think a kimono is a piece that can so easily be dressed up or down, so no matter what your plans are, a kimono is a totally viable option.
Layered under a cardigan
Once the weather starts to cool down, take the same bralette and tank and switch out the kimono for a chunky cardigan. If you’re anything like me, you like to dress to stay in just as much as you like to get dressed up to go out and be seen. So, if you want, you can even switch out the cami for a more comfortable cotton tee or tank and create a super comfy loungewear look. I hope this isn’t too grotesque, but by adding a bralette into the mix, you will avoid that annoying nipple chafing that happens from not wearing a bra for an extended period of time.
How NOT to Wear a Bralette
I thought that I would throw this caveat in there because I am guilty of this mishap. If you are going to wear a bralette under a tank, you have to make sure that when it shows, it looks intentional. If it is only poking out ever so slightly, people might wonder if you are accidentally exposing your undergarments to them. Here is a perfect example of what that looks like:
*Special Note: Although none of the bralettes that I happened to show here are from Aerie, I have to say that it is probably my favorite place to shop for bralettes (and undergarments in general, really). Everything that I have owned from Aerie is so well-fitting and comfortable. All the while they keep their prices super reasonable.
