One Cardigan, a Few Ways with Discovery

Today I wanted to share this cardigan that I found at Discovery Clothing. I’ve been blogging now for almost 5 months and I’ve been sharing a lot of Discovery finds on Instagram, but I really haven’t had the chance to share anything on here yet.  I think that Discovery is an underrated store. They have a website and multiple locations throughout the Midwest and in Florida, but when I tell most people about it, they haven’t heard of it. So I just wanted to take the chance to share what I like about Discovery as well as my tips for shopping there.

What I like most about Discovery:

Discovery is different from most other retailers because they don’t play the pricing game.  What I mean by that is they price all of their items at what seem to be fairly consistent mark-ups. From what I can tell, the only time they put items on sale is when they are truly trying to clear through a poor-seller. As a former merchandiser and as a consumer, I appreciate that very much. I know that every time I shop with them I am going to get the best price possible.  I have found quite a few items at unbeatable prices by shopping with Discovery.

Tips for Shopping Discovery:

  1. Pay attention to quality – As much as I appreciate Discovery’s pricing strategy, I do have to be honest and say that some of their merchandise is just cheaply made. For that reason, I do prefer to shop their brick-and-mortar stores rather than their e-commerce site.  It is so much easier to get a good sense of the quality of an item when you can actually see and touch it. I have a very difficult time gauging quality online. There’s definitely a difference between getting a great deal on an item versus paying a low cost because it is cheaply made.
  2. Buy multiples if you’re unsure – With that being said, usually one of the perks of shopping in-store versus online is being able to try clothes on.  Discovery, however, does not have fitting rooms. A lot of theft and merchandise damage happens in fitting rooms. This causes monetary loss to retailers.  Retailers need to cover that loss somehow. So many times the cost of any potential loss that might happen by providing fitting rooms is added to the retail price of merchandise, which the consumer ultimately pays for. By not providing fitting rooms, Discovery is able to keep their prices to the consumer as low as possible.  If you find an item that you really like, but are unsure what size will fit you best, buy both sizes and return the one that doesn’t work later.
  3. Shop Online – Since Discovery doesn’t have brick and mortar locations nationwide, shopping them online might be your only option.  It’s not a bad option though! They do have a lot of good stuff on their site and they are constantly rotating through new merchandise.  My biggest tip for shopping their e-commerce site would be to pay close attention to the details. How high up does the slit on the dress go? Can you see through the material on the item that the model is wearing? Is the length of the item that you are looking at something that you would feel comfortable wearing? They list the height and size of the models on their website. I think that makes it much easier to gauge how an item might look on me when I’m shopping online.  I’m about 5’7” so if I am shopping their website and see that the model is 5’5” and wearing a dress that hits way above her knee, I know that the same dress will likely be way too short for me to pull off.

I really enjoy shopping with Discovery. I’m sure they will continue to be one of my go-to stores based on their unbeatable prices. According to their website, their mission is to give their customers the latest trends at the lowest prices. I think that they have found a way to do that very well!

Here are a few ways the I styled my most recent Discovery purchase. For a more springy look with the same cardigan, be sure and check out my “Dressing for Spring in the Dead of Winter” post.
